SIRCULAR project partner TalTechTallinn University of Technology represented the SIRCULAR project at the 17th International Conference on the Durability of Building Materials and Components (DBMC) in Montréal, Canada, where they presented their research on the assessment of existing precast concrete sandwich panels (PCSPs).

The research focuses on methods for evaluating the condition of aging concrete panel buildings, many of which have been in service for more than 40 years. The study investigates both destructive and non-destructive testing techniques to determine two key parameters for safe and effective renovation: the thickness of concrete layers and the compressive strength of concrete.

Among the methods examined are ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) measurements, which can reduce the need for extensive destructive testing while providing valuable information for structural assessments. The findings support more efficient renovation planning and contribute to extending the lifetime of existing building stock.

The work was presented by Kristo Paalandi and Targo Kalamees and highlights how SIRCULAR partners are advancing knowledge on sustainable renovation and building decarbonisation. The study draws on data generated within the SIRCULAR project and contributes to ongoing efforts to develop innovative solutions for a more circular and energy-efficient built environment.
